Not long after Aldous Huxley took mescaline under the direction of Dr. Humphry Osmond in May 1953, he soon began to see links between the experience and mystical states of awareness, a topic in which he had a long been interested. Here he mentions the work of Dr. Andrija Puharich, a parapsychologist who had been using amanita muscaria mushrooms in his experiments with ESP and other paranormal abilities. Dr. Puharich had recently started experimenting with LSD in his parapsychology tests. In this letter Huxley notes Dr. Puharich’s approach of using smaller doses to unlock psychic potential.
